Phone companies install different types of displays in the devices they offer. This, of course, translates into the price and specifications of a given model. There are three basic types of displays used in smartphones on the market: LCD, TFT and TN, IPS and OLED. Each type of screen has its advantages and disadvantages, with which it is worth familiarizing yourself before choosing a new device for yourself. TFT, TN LCD display
The basic screen installed in phones is a liquid crystal LCD matrix, which is produced using TFT and TN technologies. The cost of their production is very low and therefore they are mainly used in cheaper devices. TFT screens (thin film transistor) are characterised by relatively low colour quality, poor contrast and narrow viewing angles. Narrow viewing angles cause that when looking at the screen at a certain angle, the image loses proper colors. TFT display shortens the life of a smartphone and negatively affects battery life due to higher power requirements than higher quality displays. LCD display manufactured in TFT technology was used in such models as: Alcatel 1C, Sony Xperia E1, Huawei Y6P, HTC Desire 620.
IPS LCD display
Currently the most popular type of liquid crystal display. It is a type of LCD screen, which is characterized by higher quality than TFT or TN. IPS screen (in-plane switching) offers users wide viewing angles along with high quality of displayed images and excellent color reproduction. This type of screen, however, is not without its drawbacks, as it handles black reproduction poorly and older models may experience problems with response time or refresh rate. Choosing a phone with an LCD display is worth paying attention, was marked as IPS. IPS display can be found in such smartphone models as Apple iPhone 7, Apple iPhone 8, Poco X3, Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Huawei P40 lite, Realme 7 Pro or Motorola Moto G8 Power.
Amoled and Super Amoled screens are not liquid crystal displays. Despite appearances, OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens are characterized by simpler technology than LCD. It is related to the fact that the operation of OLED displays requires less layers (they do not need additional backlight) and they are usually visibly thinner. The advantages of an OLED display include energy efficiency, excellent viewing angles, perfect colour reproduction, highly saturated colours and excellent black depth. These displays are also not without disadvantages. There is a risk of burning them out and the manufacturing process is expensive, which translates into the final price of the device. Displays made in OLED technology are used mainly in smartphones from the most expensive price group, often referred to as phablets. OLED screen has been used in such models of smartphones as Apple iPhone 11, Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Samsung Galaxy s20+, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung Galaxy A20e or Xiaomi Redmi Note 9.
